Digital Morphology: Whole-Slide Teaching for Haematology
What is digital morphology?
Digital morphology is the use of scanned whole slides — virtual slides — in place of glass and a microscope. It is haematology's arm of digital pathology, and the technique is also known as virtual microscopy. A slide is scanned once at high magnification and served in the browser as a deep-zoom image, so anyone, anywhere, can examine the same film the same way: scanning at low power, then moving to high power on the areas that matter.
Why teach with virtual slides?
- Everyone sees the same slide. A glass film fades, breaks, and can only be in one place. A virtual slide is identical for every learner, forever.
- The whole film, not a chosen field. Unlike a static image, a virtual slide does not pre-select the answer for you — finding the features is part of the learning.
- Relevant features annotated by experts in morphology, so learners can check what they found against what matters.
- Learn when it is convenient for you. All you need is a browser, not a microscope — and a 2,500-slide collection is waiting.
- Rare and challenging cases. Slides that might not be in every teaching collection are available to everyone.
- Immunohistochemistry included. IHC stains for bone marrows and lymph nodes, with dedicated teaching.
- Teach at distance. Slides can be shared in teaching sessions, embedded in presentations, and reviewed side by side for comparison.
- Assessment built in. Timed mock examinations and practice cases run on the same slides used for teaching.
How Virtual Microscopy does it
Our library holds over 2,500 slides — blood films, bone marrow aspirates, trephines and lymph nodes — contributed by consultant haematologists and histopathologists and scanned as complete slides. The viewer runs in any modern browser with nothing to install. Teaching sessions let a presenter drive multiple linked slide panes; collections group slides by theme; and the free Morphology Atlas publishes annotated example features from the library.
